Additional Information

Is Adoption Right for You?

Adopting an animal should never be an impulse decision. It’s a life-long commitment, sometimes lasting 10-15 years for dogs and up to 20 years for cats. There is a lot more that goes into being a responsible pet owner besides adequate food, water and shelter.

Answering the simple questions below will help you decide if adopting an animal is appropriate for you at this time. At PPRI we work very hard to provide outstanding care for our resident animals and want the best for them and their adopters.

  • Why do you and/or your family want to get a pet?
  • Who in your family is going to take care of the pet?
  • If you are considering a puppy, do you have the time needed for training?
  • Are you prepared for the costs associated with pet ownership, for medical, and every day care?
  • If you rent, does your building allow animals? Are there any restrictions? Is there a place for your pet to be free to roam safely?
  • Does anyone in the family have allergies?
  • Have you and your family been educated about pet care?
  • Will your pet fit in with you and your family’s lifestyle?
  • Is your living situation going to change in the near future?

Adoption Process

We are a foster-based rescue with a thorough application process in order to find the best fit for each animal. We vet each of our applications and get back to everyone that filled an application as soon as possible. Once all applications are vetted, we may call our potential adopters to ask additional questions to set up a meet and greet and/or interaction with one or more of our animals. Pawsitive Possibilities Rescue, Inc. (PPRI) then brings the animal to your home to see if it is the perfect match. This process is less stressful on the animal because they already trust us, similar to putting your child on the school bus!

Adoption Applications

Adoption applications are located under each individual animal, labeled Adopt Me! Click on any adoptable pal's image to be taken to their Petfinder Listing which includes additional information and photos of the animal. Once you complete an application online, one of our friendly and knowledgeable adoption coordinators will contact you, and begin the vetting process of your application. You will also receive an email as an acknowledgement of your application.

If you have specific questions about any available animal, please contact us at info@pawsitiverescue.org or (631) 553-9774. We look forward to helping you find your new best friend.

Owner Surrender

Animals are admitted to PPRI after doing an evaluation on the dog and research what medical and preventatives have been given. We are a private, non-profit 501c 3 tax exempt non-profit organization and receive no government funding. Because of this, we require a donation. This fee will help us cover the costs of caring for your pet until a new home can be found. PPRI prides itself on providing the best possible care for your animal including quality food, veterinary care, a warm place to sleep and plenty of exercise and training. Any donation in addition to the surrender donation is most gratefully appreciated.

Adoption Portraits

Each adoptable pal has a portrait painted of them by a local Long Island artist, Holly Hazen. After the animal has found their perfect fit, each adopter will receive a painting of their new family member at no cost to them. This is just one way PPRI gives back to the community and says thank you for choosing adoption!
