Bringing a New Pet Into Your Family

Oct 12, 2025

1) Set up a space for your pet– Before bringing them home, have a designated area for your pet with a bed to settle down, as well as a safe and open area of the house to roam and get accustomed to the new sights and smells.
2) Dog Proof your home- Remove any low hanging cables or wires, chemicals, or breakable items so their space is as safe as possible. Put up a gate where there are stairs or fireplaces and if you have plants where your dog can reach, make sure the plant is not toxic!
3) Keep a routine– Have a plan to make sure one or more family members are around to care for your new pet’s needs at all times. Examples include going for daily walks and having a consistent feeding schedule. This way your companion can get used to the family’s routine and know what to expect as they adjust to a new space.
4) Provide enrichment– Keep your pet happy through walks, playtime, training, treats as rewards for good behavior, and plenty of toys. Check out our future blogs for yummy recipes and DIY enrichment toys 🙂
5) Be patient– Although playtime is important, your pet is prone to get quickly overstimulated in a new environment and will also need their own time to get accustomed to their new home.
